Katherine Heigl Wears Prada
How do movie trailers attempt to coerce you into watching
the film? There are several ways. The preview can be mysterious, making you wonder enough to go see it. The trailer can be totally awesome and cool,
leading you to believe that the film will follow suit. Other sneak peeks make you laugh, convincing
you that you’ll surely have a good time watching the finished movie.
Well, in case you’re wondering what this has to do with
Katherine Heigl and movie trailers, I’ll tell you. Some trailers try to reel you in by
showcasing the film collaborators’ resumes.
Examples:
Go see Academy Award winners Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges in True Grit!
(This movie is practically overflowing with talent! I’m
there.)
(Just kidding.)
(Well, I don’t know, it actually looks interesting.)
Go see Hereafter
by Academy Award winning director Clint Eastwood!
(It was good, by the way.
We saw it last weekend.)
It’s a little hard to read, but the promo spilled across
Heigl’s dress on the 27 Dresses DVD
cover (pictured above) reads “From the screen writer of ‘Devil Wears Prada.’” All I could think was: …Really? The screen
writer? First of all, I bet only
half of the American public even knows what a screen writer is.
Second, that’s the best they
could come up with? How many wives and
girlfriends do you think turned to their significant others when they saw this
preview and giddily whispered, “Oh, I loved
the screen play in The Devil Wears Prada!
We just have to go see 27
Dresses!” My guess? None.
The marketers for this movie were really
fishing for credentials on this one. Someone
fire them before we have to watch 27

The funny thing is that it's not even like "The Devil Wears Prada" is an original screenplay - it was adapted from the book by Lauren Weisberger.
Also, if you look at the screenplay for "The Devil Wears Prada" (you can find one of the versions at the url I'll stick at the end of this comment) you'll see that the screenplay was written by Peter Hedges. Is he the screen writer of "27 Dresses"? No. Then you'll see it was revised by Howard Michael Gould, Paul Rudnick, and Don Roos.
I bet you can guess where I'm going with this: None of them wrote the screenplay for "27 Dresses."
But then, below all of that, you'll finally see "Current Revisions by: Aline Brosh McKenna" and THAT is who wrote "27 Dresses."
So, you know, I think the fact that she revised a revised adaptation of a book clearly makes her a credible reference to put on a movie cover/poster. *insert eye rolling here*
Not to mention, of course, that the publicity manager likely didn't actually care about the screen writer at all and instead was counting on the fact that people who enjoyed "The Devil Wears Prada" would have a positive reaction to recognizing it, and would soon experience Pavolvian-type conditioning every they'd see the "27 Dresses" poster without realizing it.

Ah yes! Someone understands me, here. Thank you. And thanks for the in-depth. You know what else is funny that I didn't have room to write? The screenplay for The Devil Wears Prada didn't even win any awards. LOL. It was nominated for a couple of obscure ones, but not awarded any of them. Just another tidbit.

Also, I'm not really a fan of Heigl.
Well, I liked both movies, but i'm just one of those girls that like all romantic comedies... But, I do agree with you here garrett, that was just so stupid....

I'm pretty sure anyone who thinks movies like "The Devil Wears Prada" and "27 Dresses" are not interested in quality writing. They would have done better with something like "featuring hookups with the the same cute guy from A Devil Wears Prada!"

Really? I'd have to disagree! I would totally see a movie if I knew it had a really good screenplay :)
(Granted, the above points about 27 Dresses not being particularly well-written and not being written by the same people as The Devil Wears Prada are still valid)
